Q) What is the process for buying a personal plate?
A) How It Works – Let ‘Reg’ take you through a step by step guide on buying a personal registration.
Q) What restrictions are there on buying a personal registration?
A) Anyone can buy a personal registration for their vehicle.
The only restriction that will apply is the age of the vehicle and the registrations available. You can only put a number onto a vehicle of equal age or newer. To put it simply – You can make a new car look older but not an old car look newer. For example, if you buy a new style plate with the registration AA63 ABC – you can only put that on a car registered new on or after the 1st September 2013.
Don’t worry, each registration search will confirm the age details of suitable vehicles.
You cannot put a private number on a ‘Q’ registered vehicle
Q) What are my vehicle requirements?
A) All vehicles must meet the following requirements to have a personal registration:
– Meet the age requirements of the vehicle (see above question).
– The vehicle must be registered in mainland Great Britain and Northern Ireland and be in your name or the name of a nominee.
– Be taxed.
– A vehicle which has or will need in future a valid MOT certificate.
– Be able to move under its own power.
Q) The V5C isn’t in my name, can I still buy a personal registration for someone or vehicle?
A) Yes. We sell many registrations that are intended to be given as gifts. We will ask at checkout for the name on the V5C so it can be matched during the assignment process.
Q) Can I put personal registration on my Q Registered vehicle?
A) No, you can’t put a personal registration on a Q registered vehicle.
Q) Can I purchase a registration before I have a vehicle to put it on?
A) Yes, you can purchase a personal registration and usually have 10 years from the date of purchase to assign the registration to a vehicle.
Please keep your V750 (Certificate of Entitlement) safe as this is your proof of entitlement to the registration.
If you have yet to purchase a vehicle please note the following applies to all registrations:
You can only put a number onto a vehicle of equal age or newer. To put it simply – You can make a new car look older but not an old car look newer. For example, if you buy a new style plate with the registration AA63 ABC – you can only put that on a car registered new on or after the 1st September 2013.

A) If you can’t find the registration you’re looking for please use the contact us form and include all registration options you’re after and we will see what’s available.
Q) Can I buy a registration that’s been previously used on a car?

We can transfer the registration to your vehicle or send you the V750 document so you can transfer it yourself.
Q) Can you transfer the registration for me?
A) Yes, we offer a service to transfer the registration to your vehicle for you. This is available to add at checkout.
